Can Buffing Remove Car Scratches?

Buffing can remove or reduce some light car scratches, but it cannot fix every scratch. The key question is whether the mark is sitting in the clear coat or whether it has cut into the paint layers underneath.

Clear coat scratches

Very light marks, haze and some clear-coat scuffs may improve with buffing or polishing. If the mark disappears when wet or does not catch a fingernail, polishing may be worth assessing.

Deeper paint scratches

Scratches that expose primer, plastic or metal usually need paint repair, not just buffing. Polishing can make surrounding paint glossier, but it will not put missing paint back into the scratch.

The fingernail test

If your fingernail catches in the scratch, it may be too deep for buffing alone. This is only a rough guide, so photos are still the best way for an operator to assess it.

When buff and polish helps

Buff and polish may help with dull paint, light scuffs, oxidisation and minor surface marks. It is a good option where the aim is to improve gloss and reduce visible light defects.

When scratch repair is needed

Scratch repair may be needed when the scratch is deep, localised and has damaged the paint colour. A local operator can advise whether mobile repair is suitable from clear photos.
